The goal is not to win competitions, but to gain experience as a performer and dance artist. Competitions are a great way to validate our hard work and have a chance to perform for dance industry professionals, but the goal each season is to improve our skills and build confidence as dancers.

I understand, in order to be a member of this company, I must act in accord with the following:

4. Loyalty: be faithful to my studio, dance company and fellow dancers; put team above personal glory.

5. Reliability: fulfill commitments; do what I say I will do; be on time for rehearsals and performances.

Respect

6. Respect: Treat all people with respect all the time and require the same of other dancers

7. Class: Be a good sport, be gracious in victory and accept defeat with dignity; give encouragement to competitors, compliment extraordinary performances, show sincere respect for your teachers.

8. Respect judges; treat competition judges with respect. Accept all comments, marks and critiques as valid and constructive.

9. Disrespectful Conduct: don’t engage in disrespectful conduct of any sort including profanity, obscene gestures, offensive remarks, trash-talking, taunting, boastful celebrations, or other actions that demean individuals or the activity.

 Responsibility

10. Importance of Education: be a student first and commit to high standards in your school work so that you can succeed academically and represent your future goals honorably.

11. Role-Model – Participating in dance is a privilege and not a right. I am expected to represent my studio, teachers and fellow dancers with honour on and off the dance floor. Consistently exhibit good character and conduct yourself as a positive role model.

12. Self-control- don’t fight or show excessive displays of anger or frustration.

13. Healthy lifestyle; don’t use any illegal or unhealthy substances. Support your physical lifestyle by eating healthy and getting enough rest.

14. Attendance- Come to all classes. Participate fully in every class. Realize that not doing these things effects the other dancers and teachers involved in the program.

Caring

16. Fellow company members: help promote your fellow company members by positive encouragement or by reporting any unhealthy or dangerous conduct to teachers.

Citizenship

17. Play by the Rules: maintain a thorough knowledge of and abide by all applicable competition rules, avoid temptation to gain a competitive edge through improper gamesmanship techniques that violate the highest traditions of sportsmanship.

I have read and understand the requirements of the Code of Conduct. I understand that I’m expected to perform according to this code and I understand that there may be sanctions or penalties if I do not.

Parents’ Code of Conduct

Parents are expected to:

1. Be positive role models at all dance events. The students will follow the lead of the parents and teachers.

2. Be supportive of the Studio Owner/ Company Director. The decisions made by the Studio Owner/ Company Director will be made in accordance to what is best for the routine or company as a whole.

3. Parents are there to support their children with emotional encouragement. Do not coach your dancer on their technique or performance. Trust that the company director will provide this support for each dancer.

4.Communicate with the Studio Owner/ Company Director and create a supportive working relationship.

5. Realize that the Company Director is a dance educator and therefore understands what is appropriate to be taught at each stage of development and also what is proper behavior for dance class/ convention/ competition.

6.Remember that the primary value of dance participation is to provide young people with an opportunity for self-development, physically, emotionally and mentally.

7.Respect the judgment of the judges and refrain from criticizing decisions made by the judges at competitions or in the days after.

8.Be aware that if a parent conference is desired with the studio owner/ company Director, it is highly inappropriate to speak with them regarding this during or at the conclusion of a dance event. Wait until the next day and call to make an appointment.

9. Understand and respect the different roles of parents, studio owners, teachers and judges. Parents should parent, teachers should teach, judges should judge and dancers should dance, and all should be treated with respect for what they do.
